SBU Cares: Giving $250 Weekly in the Great Lakes Bay Region [video]

Saginaw Bay Underwriters is proud to give $250 each week of 2019 to a different local charitable cause, all based on nominations from the community.

The donations are part of our SBU Cares program, which began in 2013 to celebrate our 150th anniversary with $150 weekly donations.

“We’re increasing the amount from $150 to $250 each week in 2019, because we want to offer even more help to the communities in which we live and work,” said President & CEO Peter N. Ewend.

The way SBU Cares works is simple: Anyone can nominate a cause simply by emailing sbucares@sbuins.com. We then choose from the nominations each week and make a donation.

“At first we thought the program would only continue through 2013, but it became clear right away that there are many more worthy local causes than there are weeks in a year,” said Ewend.

From 2013-2018, we supported hundreds of local causes through SBU Cares, with donations amounting to more than $40,000 in addition to our other regular giving.

“We have clients and locations in Saginaw, Bay City and Midland, so we try to donate in all three areas,” Ewend said. “We also like to support all different kinds of causes − schools, nonprofits, fundraising events, social service groups, you name it.”

Recent recipients of SBU Cares donations include the Saginaw Community Foundation, Women of Colors, Walk for Hope, YMCA, Saginaw Police Department Reserve Unit, Pride, Essexville-Garber bands, BV Mega Fest and the Good Samaritan Rescue Mission.

“This year, with the increased amount, we really want to support your cause,” said Ewend. “So send those nominations!”

Anyone interested in making a nomination should email sbucares@sbuins.com. Our Facebook page also regularly posts pictures and the recipients’ stories at facebook.com/sbuins
